A Little Beach History
Tamarama has always had a flair for the dramatic. Over a century ago, the valley behind the beach was home to Wonderland City, once the largest open-air amusement park in the Southern Hemisphere. Today that land is the leafy Tamarama Park, perfect for a lazy afternoon picnic.
The beach’s name is said to come from the Aboriginal word gamma gamma, often translated as “storm”. On a big swell day, you’ll see how it earned it.

Spend the afternoon on the lawns of Tamarama Park, and finish the day back at your villa with a drink on the balcony as the ocean turns silver.
When to Visit
- Spring (September to November) brings warm days and light crowds. From late October, the coastal path fills with Sculpture by the Sea, a free outdoor exhibition winding from Bondi to Tamarama.
- Autumn (March to May) brings warm water, golden afternoons and a slower pace.
- Summer (December to February) brings the best beach energy of the year. Long, hot days run into balmy evenings, the water is at its most inviting, and the whole city comes alive. Spending the season in one of Sydney’s most exclusive beach suburbs is Sydney at its very best.
