Neighbourhood Guide
Getting around
Take the ferry if you can. The regular Manly Ferry takes about 30 minutes from Circular Quay and the fast ferry around 20, with harbour views all the way. If you'd rather drive, the city is about 30 minutes away by car. Driving is the easier option if you have lots of luggage or older guests, since the ferry terminal has a few steps. Once you're here, most of our villas are a short walk from both beaches and the town centre, and plenty of locals get around by bike along the beachfront path.
Eating and drinking
Most of Manly's eating and drinking happens on and around The Corso. Down at the wharf, Hugo's Manly serves Italian food on a deck right over the harbour, and Felons Brewing makes its own beer and is a good place for a sunset drink as the ferries come in. Over on North Steyne, Hemingway's is a cosy French restaurant run by a couple from France, known for its beef cheek and crème brûlée. Locals will tell you the best fish and chips are a block or two off The Corso. At the end of the coastal path, The Boathouse at Shelly Beach is a relaxed spot for a meal by the water.
Family-friendly Manly
Manly works well for multi-generational trips, from grandparents to toddlers. North Steyne Playground is fenced and right by the beach. Gilbert Park and Manly Cove, both next to the wharf, are handy for a picnic while you wait for a ferry. Kids love the ocean pool at Fairy Bower, and on rainy days, Escape This on The Corso keeps older ones busy. For a longer outing, follow the flat, easy path to Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve and Shelly Beach. More than 150 species of fish live in the protected bay, and you might spot the friendly blue groper.
Beaches, walks and landmarks
Manly Beach stretches for 1.5 kilometres, with a long promenade running behind the sand. Every morning, locals swim across to Shelly Beach, a calmer cove around the headland that's ideal for snorkelling. For a big walk, the Manly to Spit Bridge track covers about 10 kilometres of bushland and hidden beaches, or you can head north along the coast to Freshwater and Curl Curl. Want something easier? The North Head Sanctuary and Fairfax walk is a paved, stroller-friendly clifftop track with views back to the city. It's 30 to 40 minutes on foot from the wharf, or a short bus ride. Look out for humpback whales between May and November. The historic Q Station is on the harbour side of the same headland.
Best Time to Stay in Manly
Spring (September to November) is Manly's best-kept secret. Days are mostly dry and sunny, wildflowers bloom on North Head, and whales still pass offshore.
Autumn (March to May) brings warm water and quieter beaches, perfect for snorkelling and long lunches.
Summer (December to February) is Manly in full swing, with surfers out at dawn, families on the sand and long, warm evenings. It's the most popular time of year to stay.
